A Writer’s Workshop Experience

After a Read Aloud of Can I Be Your Dog? by Troy Cummings, the group will collaborate to write a persuasive, friendly letter to the main character’s hometown library. Then, your child will write a persuasive letter from the perspective of a dog looking for a furever home!

10:15-11:00 Art Lesson

Intro to Painting

After an introduction to our Balloon Dog theme, the group will follow step-by-step instructions for painting a pre-drawn background which will include their dog's favorite bone toy.

9:30-10:10 Lesson

A Book Club Experience

After a Read Aloud of Pig the Pug and Pig the Winner by Aaron Blabey, the group will compare and contrast the character traits of the main characters using a Venn Diagram providing evidence from the stories. Then, your child will create a Wanted Poster identifying the character traits they want their dog to possess.

10:15-11:00 Art Lesson

Meet the Artist

After a quick art history lesson of the iconic "Balloon Dog" sculpture and Artist Jeff Koons, the group will begin sculpting their own balloon dog by adding foil pieces starting around a wire frame.

9:30-10:10 Lesson

A Math and Science Experience

After a Read Aloud of The Blue Balloon by Mick Inkpen, the group will experiment with the chemical reaction created by combining baking soda and vinegar to inflate a balloon. Then your child will hypothesize how much baking soda it takes to inflate the balloon, measure and record their ingredients, and practice measuring their inflated balloons.

10:15-11:00 Art Lesson

Finishing Touches

After a summary of their sculpture progress, the group will finish shaping clay over their dog frames and add paint.

9:30-10:10 Lesson

A Book Club Experience

After a Read Aloud of Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion, the group will create a collaborative comic strip sequencing the events in the story and incorporating important phrases from the book. Then your child will create a comic strip-style story illustrating unique ways their dog might go from clean to dirty.

Home for a Dog

After a quick sketch of their dog's dream house, the group will turn their sketch into a tiny reality by painting their design onto a birdhouse.
